Hurricane Shutters for Storm Season

Hurricane shutters are the first line of defense for many people who are living in vicinities within the path of hurricanes.

Generally, people use hurricane shutters in their homes to protect themselves and their properties from damages caused by hurricanes and storms. In fact, these are an essential object in hurricane-prone areas like the majority of the Florida peninsula. Shutters prevent roof failure from occurring by preventing hurricane winds from penetrating one’s home. Otherwise, if a door or window is breeched by these strong winds, strong pressure is created within the interior walls of a house which may ultimately lead to roof failure. Once the roof fails, the inside portion of buildings or structures become vulnerable to the ravaging storm.

There are various types of hurricane shutters. The question as to which works best depend on the need and circumstances of it users. One of the most common type of hurricane shutters are storm panel shutters. These shutters are mainly made out of steel and aluminum that are attached around doors and windows through tracks or bolts. Among all permanent shutter systems, these are the least costly. They are also removable and capable of providing door and window protection. However, they may be difficult to store and install. Another type is the accordion hurricane shutters which are usually housed in the sides of doors or windows when not used. They unfold like an accordion when used during storms. Some of these shutters come with keys which make them very effective in theft prevention. They may, however, not be aesthetically compatible with some house designs. They also move on wheels which can make them defective within a short span of time. Colonial hurricane shutters, on the other hand, are louvered shutters that are installed in the walls beside windows. When used, both of its sides need only to be folded together. These can serve a two-fold purpose of decorating a house and protecting one’s home. The only disadvantage with these shutters is that they need a center rod or storm bar to lock them in place further lengthening installation time.

Regardless of which type of hurricane shutters one will ultimately choose, it is important that these should be installed ahead of time. Ideally, as soon as a hurricane alert is raised, installation should already commence. The right hardware and tools should be readily available to make sure that these shutters would be able to serve their purpose.
