Roller Shutters for Storm and Hurricane Protection

Now, more and more business and home owners recognize the benefits of using roller shutters. Aside from effectively providing protection against storm and hurricanes, these shutters are found to be just as effective in offering privacy and security.

Roller shutters are traditionally used as hurricane shutters. These shutters are used to protect a house, building or structure from roof failure during strong storms or hurricanes. Roof failure often occurs when hurricane winds are able to breech into windows, doors and other openings in a house or building structure. Once this happens, pressure in the interior space builds up until the resulting upward pressure cause a roof to collapse. Without a roof, the interior portion of the house and all the things in it, become vulnerable to natural elements.

Roller shutters, or roll-down hurricane shutters, are installed above windows or doors. Tracks are usually attached on the sides. When they are not used, they are rolled up and encased in an enclosed box. These shutters can be operated manually through a hand crank or pull straps. They can also be controlled electronically through a push button, wall switch or remote control. Most of these shutters are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or aluminum which can offer superior window protection.

Though there are various types of hurricane shutters available today, they stand out because very minimal time is needed to make them storm-ready. Moreover, these shutters are considered by experts to be the easiest among all shutter systems to operate. They are also permanently installed so storage space is not a problem. Aside from providing hurricane protection, they are also effective as theft deterrent. Next to hurricane glass, these shutters require the least maintenance. In addition, roller shutter owners are able to enjoy heating and cooling costs by using these during extreme weather because these are effective in trapping hot or cold air. The foam-filled roller shutter variant is also a good noise insulator which gives home owners the added benefit of uninterrupted sleep.

Experts can only think of two disadvantages of using roller shutters. One disadvantage is that they are more costly than the other shutter systems. Average cost of such shutters is around $30 to $55 for every square foot. Electronically-operated roller shutters also need a backup battery system so that they will continue to function even during power outages. The second is that unlike other shutters like the plantation and colonial style shutters, they do not add aesthetic appeal to one’s home.
