Aside from providing hurricane protection, they are also effective as theft deterrent. Next to hurricane glass, these shutters require the least maintenance. In addition, roller shutter owners are able to enjoy heating and cooling costs by using these during extreme weather because these are effective in trapping hot or cold air. The foam-filled roller shutter variant is also a good noise insulator which gives home owners the added benefit of uninterrupted sleep.
Experts can only think of two disadvantages of using roller shutters. One disadvantage is that they are more costly than the other shutter systems. Average cost of such shutters is around $30 to $55 for every square foot. Electronically-operated roller shutters also need a backup battery system so that they will continue to function even during power outages. The second is that unlike other shutters like the plantation and colonial style shutters, they do not add aesthetic appeal to one’s home.
